This piece, sometimes also called The Inn of the Dawn Horse, and was Leonora Carrington’s first surrealist piece. She revisits childhood memories to create this piece, showing her on a small chair wearing white jodhpurs. The creatures surrounding her give it a dreamlike feel, with a hyena, and tailless rocking horse in the room, and a galloping white horse seen through the window outside.

Leonora Carrington (1917 –2011) was a British-born Mexican artist, surrealist painter, and novelist. She lived and worked predominantly in Mexico City and was a key figure in the surrealist movement of the 1930s. Carrington was also a founding member of the women's liberation movement in Mexico during the 1970s. Her work is held in museums and galleries around the world, and four of her works make up part of Tate’s collection.
